What to do in El Chaltén, the National Capital of Trekking

At the northern end of Los Glaciares National Park, at the foot of the mythical Mount Fitz Roy and surrounded by the Patagonian mountain range, is El Chaltén, a paradise of pure nature. This destination offers a privileged enviroment, with multiple choices for the practice of outdoor activities and mountain sports.


Activities in El Chaltén

Short walks or trekking expeditions of several days, of major or minor difficulty, may be undertaken throug a large number of well signposted paths. The most recognized circuits include: the Mounts Torre and Fitz Roy, Laguna Torre, Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Verde and Laguna Azul. Not in vain, El Chaltén has been declared National Capital of Trekking. In addition, other activities such as climbing, horseback riding, bird watching, fishing, camping, navigating, and ice-trekking, among others, are offered to active travelers for them to enjoy the destination 100%.

Viedma Glacier and Lago del Desierto

The Viedma Glacier and Lago del Desierto, near El Chaltén, stand out for their particular beauty. Navigations are offered in both places. In the Viedma Glacier, the traveler also has the possibility to practice ice-trekking; while Lago del Desierto is an unparalleled option for sport fishing, trekking and camping.

Cagliero Glacier

In addition, there is a new proposal that combines trekking, climbing (of minor difficulty) and ice-trekking by the unexplored Cagliero Glacier, to provide a unique and very complete mountain experience. This program can be combined with 1 or 2 nights (the previous and posterior to the expedition) at the Cagliero Refuge. By doing it this way, the expedition turns to be more relaxed, requiring less physical effort. The best time to book this program is from November to April.

Laguna Cóndor Mountain Refuge

Another possible choice that combines the wild beauty of an unexplored place with the services and facilities of a camp, is Laguna Cóndor Mountain Refuge, just 20 kms away from El Chaltén. The refuge has 8 double cabins with private bathroom, and offers an experience of intimate contact with the nature and peace of the place, nestled in a dream landscape. Activities such us kayak in Laguna Condor, mountain bike, and hiking may be practiced here.
